This expressive vase is a fine example of Benny Motzfeldt’s signature work at PLUS, where she explored organic textures and painterly effects in glass.
Executed in light blue with scattered bubbles and irregular surface structure, it shimmers with depth and vitality, recalling flowing water or shifting sky.
The rounded body with short neck gives the piece a compact and sculptural form, while its tactile surface reflects Motzfeldt’s fascination with contrasts between clarity and opacity, smoothness and texture. Each piece is unique, and this one, with its luminous blue tone and lively surface, is particularly striking.
Perfect as a decorative stand-alone object or grouped with other BM vases, it is also highly collectible — an authentic piece of Scandinavian mid-century design history.
About the designer
Benny Anette Motzfeldt (1909–1995) was one of Norway’s foremost glass artists and a central figure in Scandinavian modernism. She began her glass career in the 1950s, became head designer at Randsfjord Glassworks in the 1960s, and later artistic director at the PLUS workshop in Fredrikstad from 1967 to 1979.
At PLUS she developed her most characteristic style: thick-walled glass with bubbles, veils of color, and organic textures that gave each piece a painterly, almost sculptural presence. Works signed “PLUS BM NORWAY” are among her most sought-after, representing the pinnacle of her career.
This signed light blue vase embodies her artistry: bold, experimental, and timeless — a true collector’s object for enthusiasts of Scandinavian design.
