This striking vase exemplifies Benny Motzfeldt’s artistry at PLUS, where she worked from the late 1960s through the 1970s and developed her most distinctive glassworks. Crafted in thick glass with an internal play of white and green, enriched by subtle bubbles and painterly textures, it has a luminous, almost ethereal quality. The cylindrical body is slightly rounded in form, topped by a softly tapering neck — both organic and modern in character.
Its weight and thickness give it a sculptural presence, while the delicate internal veining makes each example unique. The interplay of semi-translucent white and green flows like a landscape within the glass, a hallmark of Motzfeldt’s painterly approach to glass art.
As with her other works, this vase is equally compelling as a stand-alone decorative piece or as part of a group with other BM vases. Highly collectible, it represents the bold creativity of Norwegian mid-century and modernist glass design.
About the designer
Benny Anette Motzfeldt (1909–1995) was one of Norway’s most influential glass artists and a central figure in Scandinavian modernism. Trained as a painter, she turned to glass in the 1950s and went on to lead design at Randsfjord Glassworks before becoming artistic director at the PLUS workshop in Fredrikstad in 1967.
At PLUS she developed her most innovative techniques — thick-walled vessels with trapped bubbles, streaks of color, and painterly veils within the glass. Her works, often signed “PLUS BM NORWAY”, are today regarded as icons of Norwegian design and are represented in major museums worldwide.
This signed mid-sized vase is a fine example of her style: sculptural, organic, and richly expressive, making it a true collector’s piece for enthusiasts of Scandinavian design.
