A very large Telemark rosemaled bowl in finely turned, thin-walled wood — surprisingly light despite its scale, with clean form and confident, classical brushwork.
Material: Hand-turned wood, hand-painted in Telemark rosemaling
Size: Diameter 41 cm (approx. 16.1 in), height 16 cm (approx. 6.3 in)
Signature: LRJ, dated 1996
Style: Classical Telemark, with flowing scrolls, stylized flowers and foliage
Colors & Finish: Natural light wood ground finished in clear gloss; matte-painted rosemaling in blue, red, green, ochre/yellow
Condition: Good vintage condition – no cracks, chips, or losses; minor grey surface soil and varnish runs under foot, not visible in display
The form is finely judged, with discreet outer border and a low, shaped foot that lifts the bowl gracefully. Despite its monumental size, the thin-walled turning makes it surprisingly light in the hand.
The decoration is a strong, classical Telemark composition: lively scrolls, stylized flowers and foliage painted with a steady, confident brush. The contrast between the glossy wood ground and the matte painting gives the bowl a quiet, elegant presence.
Condition is very good overall. Expected signs of age are confined to the underside — a little surface soil from tabletops and some thicker spots where the clear varnish has run — while the visible surfaces remain fresh, clean, and beautifully preserved.
A strong and refined piece of Telemark craftsmanship: large yet light, technically confident and visually striking. More than a vessel, it is a display masterpiece, meant to hold pride of place in the home.
About Telemark rosemaling
